2024 Ontario EV Registrations by Region

Ontario registered 57,648 electric vehicles in 2024, with battery electric vehicles commanding a decisive 70.8% share of the provincial EV market. The year saw dramatic seasonal fluctuations, as third-quarter registrations surged to more than double second-quarter levels before plummeting by over 50% in the final three months of the year.

  • 40,819 BEV registrations — Battery electric vehicles captured 2.4 times more registrations than plug-in hybrids across the province.
  • 17,908 BEVs in Q3 — The summer quarter delivered peak demand, representing 43.9% of the year's total battery electric registrations.
  • 21,594 Central Ontario BEVs — The region accounted for 52.9% of all provincial battery electric vehicle registrations.
  • 828 Northern Ontario BEVs — The region recorded the lowest adoption rate, capturing just 2.0% of the province's battery electric market.

Ontario BEV Registrations by Region — 2024

Battery electric vehicle registrations showed stark regional concentration, with Central Ontario, Southwestern Ontario, and Toronto accounting for 84.6% of the province's 40,819 BEV registrations.

Region Q1 Registrations Q2 Registrations Q3 Registrations Q4 Registrations Total BEV
Toronto 1,221 1,043 2,697 1,291 6,252
Central Ontario 3,640 4,192 9,829 3,933 21,594

Central Ontario emerged as the undisputed leader in battery electric vehicle adoption, registering 21,594 units and claiming more than half of the provincial market. Southwestern Ontario secured second place with 6,774 registrations, narrowly edging out Toronto's 6,252 units. Eastern Ontario and Ottawa contributed 4,451 and 934 registrations respectively, while Northern Ontario brought up the rear with just 828 units.

The quarterly pattern revealed a pronounced summer buying season, with third-quarter BEV registrations soaring 124.6% above second-quarter levels to reach 17,908 units. However, this peak proved unsustainable as fourth-quarter registrations collapsed 54.5% to 8,147 units, suggesting either seasonal purchasing behavior or the influence of expiring incentive programs. The contrast between Northern Ontario's 2.0% market share and Central Ontario's 52.9% dominance underscores the geographic divide in EV infrastructure and consumer adoption across the province.

Ontario PHEV Registrations by Region — 2024

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles captured 16,829 registrations across Ontario in 2024, following similar regional and seasonal patterns to their battery-only counterparts.

Region Q1 Registrations Q2 Registrations Q3 Registrations Q4 Registrations Total PHEV
Toronto 435 571 1,227 614 2,847
Central Ontario 1,009 1,323 3,270 1,470 7,072
Eastern Ontario 443 695 1,153 709 3,000
Southwestern Ontario 451 640 1,452 730 3,273
Northern Ontario 89 195 238 115 637
ONTARIO TOTAL 2,427 3,424 7,340 3,638 16,829

Central Ontario maintained its leadership position in the PHEV segment with 7,072 registrations, though its 42.0% market share represented notably lower regional concentration than the 52.9% it commanded in BEVs. Southwestern Ontario claimed 3,273 PHEV registrations while Eastern Ontario captured 3,000 units, demonstrating relatively stronger PHEV appeal in regions outside the Central Ontario core. Toronto registered 2,847 PHEVs, and Northern Ontario again posted the weakest performance with 637 units.

The 2.4-to-1 ratio of BEV to PHEV registrations signals a clear consumer preference for fully electric powertrains, though PHEVs exhibited remarkably similar quarterly volatility. Third-quarter PHEV registrations jumped 114.4% to reach 7,340 units before plunging 50.4% in the fourth quarter to 3,638 units. Northern Ontario's slightly higher PHEV market share of 3.8% compared to its 2.0% BEV share suggests that range anxiety may play a more significant role in remote regions, though adoption rates remain suppressed across both vehicle categories in the province's northern reaches.

Please note: The registration data presented in the tables above is sourced from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. This data reflects EV vehicle registrations by Forward Sortation Area (FSA) and does not distinguish between business and private registrations. Additionally, it is not known whether all registered vehicles have been plated at the time of reporting.

The concentration of 57,648 EV registrations in Central Ontario, Southwestern Ontario, and the Greater Toronto Area presents a substantial market opportunity for residential and commercial charging infrastructure installers, particularly as third-quarter demand patterns demonstrate the potential for rapid adoption surges. With Northern Ontario and rural regions showing persistently low uptake despite accounting for vast geographic areas, the installation market may increasingly focus on density plays in urban and suburban corridors where EV ownership has already achieved critical mass and where multi-unit residential buildings and workplace charging stations represent the next frontier for infrastructure deployment.
